Do More With Less Is Not a Strategy

Healthcare loves telling people to “do more with less.”

More patients. More productivity. More access. Better outcomes. Better engagement.

Less staff. Less time. Less money.

And somehow, the difference is just supposed to disappear.

In the very first episode of *Well, Damnit.*, Matthew takes on one of healthcare’s favorite phrases and asks the question that usually gets skipped:

**What exactly are we changing that makes “more with less” possible?**

Sometimes healthcare genuinely does have to operate with fewer resources. Budgets are real. Workforce shortages are real. Financial pressure is real.

But sometimes “do more with less” is just what we say when nobody has actually redesigned the work.

This episode gets into wasted capacity, expensive people doing cheap work, broken processes held together by heroic employees, wellness initiatives that ignore operational dysfunction, and why accountability cannot become organizational duct tape for shitty systems.

And there are a few questions worth taking back to your own organization:

What process makes your job harder than it needs to be?

What work are highly trained people doing that someone else could handle?

What part of your organization would collapse tomorrow if one specific person stopped manually holding it together?

And if you were designing the work from scratch today...

Healthcare absolutely needs efficiency.

But before you ask people for more, make damn sure the system isn't wasting what they're already giving you.
