Healthcare Experience Required. Until Somebody Gives You Healthcare Experience.
Breaking into healthcare without a clinical license—and why experience from somewhere else still counts.
PREFER YOUR CHAOS IN AUDIO FORM?
I get asked pretty regularly how someone without a clinical license—or even healthcare experience—can break into healthcare operations.
I’ve crossed industries more than once: multi-unit specialty retail, finance, restaurant operations, healthcare, even dog daycare, boarding, and training before eventually returning to healthcare. Every move required learning a new industry without pretending everything I already knew suddenly stopped mattering.
In this episode, I talk about transferable operational experience, the healthcare-experience catch-22, learning the industry without apologizing for being non-clinical, and why healthcare may be overlooking strong operators simply because they learned their skills somewhere else.
Every healthcare leader with healthcare experience once had none. Somebody had to open the first door.
